Sticks & Stones
It's been awhile guys.
Last week, I teamed up with my dear friend Britt to shoot for her final class photography project. Britt wanted to highlight the insecurities that we've faced and dealt with and how it has affected our lives.
Does anyone remember that saying, "sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me?"
We used to say it on the playground at recess before racing towards the swing-set.
But, honestly, I think it's completely untrue. Don't you think it should be, "words will ALWAYS hurt me?" I do.
Britt asked me to write down hurtful words that had been spoken to me or spoken behind my back. Isn't it funny, how we don't easily forget? Words like, "fat, ugly, needy, selfish, not good enough, bitch, and several others have been burned in my mind.
I think we don't realize the power that words hold. For many years, the negative words held so much more weight than the positive ones. For years, the negative words were what I believed to be true and created a lens through which I've seen myself.
Sometimes I think it's crazy that it's taken me 29 years to realize that my identity, value, and worth are defined in Christ, and Christ alone. Spending time in the presence of Jesus will open your eyes to Truth. And, it's better late than never. Here is what I've truly learned that God says about me:
"So the King will greatly desire your beauty; because He is your Lord, worship Him" - Psalm 45:11
"Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care. So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows." - Matthew 10:29,31
"But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light." - 1 Peter 2:9
I'm good enough.
"Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus." - Romans 8:1
"See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!" - 1 John 3:1
The enemy would love for me to keep my head down while believing the untrue, unkind words said about me. And he would love the same for you. But I promise you friend, what God says and feels about me, He says and feels about you too. Pinky promise.
Special thanks to Britt for being able to be a part of such a real, raw, and beautiful project.
We are more than enough. And always will be.
